I’ve read all of the inner / outer circle blogs about where to use Yammer and where to use Teams, but they pretty much do the same job. As Teams grows and becomes more mature as a product then it will be able to do everything Yammer can. You can now also have external guests join your Teams, Team.
So my question is … do you think Teams will eventually replace Yammer, if so why?
Are you an organization that’s successfully using both?
Not for some time, at least. As many have stated Yammer is better suited for a larger/broader audience than the more intimate project usage of Teams.
I believe that with the rise of Teams Yammer will have a hard time to keep alive due to the social alternatives out there like the Facebooks and WeChats of this world.
Yammer had to usages before Teams was there: Social Platform and Team collaboration. The last aspect is now replaced by Teams leaving only the social platform to be taken serious.
In my experience people like to keep work and private life separated on the app level. I see a lot of social interaction from our global users outside Office 365, with Facebook, WeChat and WhatsApp for example.Â
And if we consider the outer circle aspect in an organization then the modern communication/news and hub pages are taking over a lot of the global communication functionality.
In case you want as an organization to have your own social platform like Yammer where your employees interact on social bases you need to find an incentive that offers more than the other players already do. Yammer as an app is lacking here a lot of features I think. It balances at the moment too much inbetween Teams (the real Team collaboration app) and a social platform. Only if Microsoft really uplifts Yammer with an modern experience like its competitors it has a real chance.
In the long run, yes, I think Yammer will run its course and become less relevant. In the short term though I think there is a place for both. Comments I hear from clients is that Teams seems a little bit too “serious” for what they need and they have a hard time imagining how to use it, while Yammer is a more familar construct (social for corporates) and most users know how to interact immmediately upon seeing it.
I agree, these two apps cover different audiences.Â
It is unfortunate that there are duplication of functionality e.g. files and groups should be refined, otherwise, users will get confused where to put content.Â
If users have to ask “where should I put this?” then there is something inherently wrong.Â

I feel that the two need to be one. With the ability to create Public teams, that anyone in the company can join, you get 90% of the functionality of Yammer.  Microsoft just needs to resolve the size limits for a Team.  Yammer is just a very light weight Team.Â
Maybe MS should consider the ability to create just that, a light weight Team without all the overhead of SharePoint. Given that chat is a feature of Exchange it would be nice to have the ability to choose what type of Team you want.  For Yammer like Team you could just choose a chat based Team.
I don’t like the idea of having to have multiple clients now open. We know how heavy Teams is and to have to run a separate client for Yammer so that you can get notifications doesn’t make sense to me.
