I have the domain mycompany.com registered in my Office 365 domains list and I own the domain name via Godaddy. I want my SharePoint online URL to be https://sp.mycompany.com. Could you please provide the steps to make this happen (detail is welcome as I’m pretty new to this).Â

You cannot change your private site collection domain. Â Here is the open item in uservoice requesting the ability to change these URLS.
You could perform a redirect from sp.mycompany.com to mycompany.sharepoint.com but it would only be a redirect and not a rename.
