I have Visual Studio 2010 Premium, and point it to my works SharePoint folder and get an error when I try to make a new project; “A SharePoint is not installed on this computer”. I love Visual Basic, but don’t know if it’s worth loading more programs on my current PC, or just doing SharePoint via their tools. (SharePoint Designer) I do want more functionality like: Search uploaded files, and cool webpages that cross libraries and include links so a document can be grouped in multiple views without replication. Is it simple to install a SharePoint on my main PC and is there value added?
It all comes down to the version of VS that is being used. I think you have to install the SharePoint server on the same workstation or server if you are using VS2010.

If you wish to get the most out of VS 2010 you need SharePoint installed on the same server or workstation. You will get the full fidelity of the integration and this adds a lot of value. Installation can be simple but you will need additional resources. I would check out AutoSPInstaller on Codeplex (http://autospinstaller.codeplex.com/) to help with the installation. There is a recently published article on MSDN that can help you answer this question, although it is focused on SharePoint 2013.
