What Sharepoint monitoring tool could I recommend to my clients?
I have seen
- OOB Central Administration Monitoring
- Idera/Metalogix
- ManageEngine
- Researching about SCOM
Any info is welcome.
Thanks.
We use SCOM. SCOM is a pain to setup and configure and really requires it’s own dedicated full time admin.
If you already use SCOM in your company, then it’s worth having them install the SharePoint “Management pack” (A free add on MS provides) to SCOM.
One nice thing about SCOM and the management pack: It self corrects some problems – ie if the timer service stops, it will restart it.
If you just want to know if the sites are up, there is a cheap ($75 USD) tool from  Jam software called server sentinel – it can be used to pull up a website and send you an email when it goes down.  It’s a great starting point for monitoring, you can set it up in an 20 minutes. I bought a personal license for home and I use it to monitor a few websites out on the internet (ie my wordpress blog and a few sites I’ve helped people out with)

I would say that SCOM would be the preferred solution if it is general environment monitoring you are after.
