Earlier on today, I had one of my end users come down and log a call about an new content type error.

Re-creating  the Content Type using Site Action > Site Setting > Site Content Types has produced the following errors
Error

On quizzing them a bit, I found out these were the steps taken by them when trying to create a new content type.

The user uploaded a new document to an  existing document library, during the process of uploading the new document there was an option to use an existing Content Type however this is a new document which requires a new Content Type.  To create the new Content Type the user navigated to the existing document library settings, however the options was not available to create a new Content Type using the document library settings.

The user was able to open the document library using the ‘open in windows explorer’ button from the menu ribbon, this allowed the user to open the Content Type folder  structure and create a new folder mirroring the exiting Content Type properties.

However, the user could not add the new Content Type to the existing library’s Content listings meaning all new documents uploaded could not use the new Content Type properties created by the user.

To resolve the issue, attempts was made to delete the Content Type created by the user using the document library windows folder Explorer. However user was unable to delete the folder created from the earlier process. Therefore the Content Type folder was deleted using SharePoint Designer 2010.

When trying to create a new content type, the user is getting an error message that this content type already exists.

So, can anyone help me on how to clear out this left over content type so that I can re-create it at the correct level?
