If you listen to the hype “the Cloud” is going to take over the world in a few years. Very soon – all but the most risk-averse companies will be completely operating on Office 365.
Not sure it will happen that fast (and I also think there will be many other Cloud providers popping up to take some of the market share), but it will eventually become the dominant way to “do I.T.”.
So – ten years from now – if all of the hardware and software in a companies data center is now just a museum, what will be the future for our jobs ? Will there more opportunity or less, some of us will have to reskill but to what ? If we don’t run the systems what will developers do ? Will developers be employed in companies any more, or will they just be “App” developers who build and promote in a app store ?
Love to know your thoughts (and guesses) on where we are going and what that it will mean for the various SharePoint job roles of today …
The only thing we can be sure of, is change. If you’re in the IT industry, you should be thriving on change and know that nothing stands still. You need to adapt to it, or get out. I think there will always be jobs for everyone, there is more than enough business for everyone. I have other concerns about the cloud. I think I’ll post about that actually…
I have been in IT for over 15 years and I can honestly say that if I take a snapshot for every 5 year I am sure that my job changed. IT has changed rapidly and it has been a challenge to follow the new technology and ways to make an up-to-date solution.
It is a natually change and “The Cloud” are offering a lot to Companies but also has it limits. There are a lot of choices to make before migrating to anything in the cloud and the importance of the consulting part is getting more important. Network infrastructure, device possibilities and security (!) need to be evaluated. Unfortunately people are getting used to devices and apps not costing much money….
I think we are going to see a lot of cloud devices independent of the Company infrastructure. A sort of mix of bring-your-own-device and personal area on the devices. A single sign-on on various systems (computers, cars, televisions etc.) where you get your stuff (personal or Company) available and the device determines what you actually can use. When you log off the data is not stored on the device and leaves Little or no footprint.
SharePoint can be used on a lot of devices already and there will still be need for the consultants, architects and developers as these develop the cloud solutions, put them on Office 365 / Azure and people are just buying the apps and use them.
It has been a long time since I changed a defective 128kb block of 30-pins RAM in a computer – and actually I miss the old non-complex days of IT with DOS and Windows 3.11
