On Friday evening we phased in a new change onto the home page of the SharePoint-Community.net. We swapped the old JQuery slider with some more modern looking tiles, as show below …
So, why did we do it ?
There are a few reasons :
- Better use of the home page. As you can see, we often have a lot of things happening on SharePoint-Community.net (and, usually at the same time!). We have regular SPChats, competitions, whitepapers and lots of other cool content! We needed ways to highlight the best so that visitors are immediately alerted to the latest and greatest. The new Tiles allows us to do that.
- They look nice! Hopefully you will agree that the Tiles look much cooler and far more in-line with Microsoft’s new metro look.
- Sponsored Tiles. To make the community more engaging we always try to offer cool prizes, such as tablets, tickets, courses and free software licenses. We also have hosting and running costs. Someone needs to pay for all the cool goodies 😉 To provide something of real value to our sponsors we now intend to offer a “sponsored tile”. (If you are interested in sponsoring a tile, please speak with Mark Jones or Vlad Catrinescu.
What do you think ?
As always, let us know what you think. Any ideas to further improve them? Can you help us out and Tweet this discussion so we can gauge other opinion ?
Thanks to Stefan Bauer
The Tiles were designed by Stefan Bauer who is one of our Community Reps. Big thanks to him!
?width=750
JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3.Â
Fully customizable with basically 4 slots that can be either 1+1+1=1, 3+1, 2+2, etc..
it’s really amazing! I guess Stefan will need to do a blog post on it when he gets back
This looks very nice. The metro looks flexible as it allows to create different sizes. I will like to know how this was implemented. Is this a special web part or java script coding.
Hey Tracy,
Stefan would be the best person to help you with that, however he is on vacation until next friday!
These look great! We were hoping to implement this look and feel in our 2013 implementation. Can you share a little about how you created the look?
