We have added a new Sharepoint 2007 server to our farm. When adding permissions using this server’s web frontend, the page just hangs and does not finish. It transpires that the permissions have been added but it got stuck on the email part. We have checked the smtp settings on central admin and they are ok. The adding of user permissions from other servers in the farm works fine. Its just this new server.

Have you checked the firewall settings or AV settings to ensure that nothing is being blocked SMTP wise on the new server?
