Currently our login prompt is an actual window.
We would like to change it so that while accessing SharePoint externally via IIS the prompt is embedded into a page in the browser.
Is this possible?

Not with Windows authentication. It can be done with FBA, but I wouldn’t implement the complexities of FBA simply because of a login popup.
