We have added a new Sharepoint 2007 server to our farm. When add permissions using this server’s web, the page just hangs and does not finish. It transpires that the permissions have been added but it got stuck on the email part.
We have checked the smtp settings on central admin and they are ok. The adding of user permissions from other servers in teh farm works fine. Its just this new server.

Have you checked firewall and AV settings on the new server?
