Career question:
I have 2 opportunities, I am struggling to choose
Position 1: SharePoint Architect position. It is on the ground floor of a new sector in an engineering firm, so I will essentially be in charge of setting up the entire environment. This leaves huge room for advancement but also a bit of a risk. This situation mimics a government setting.
Position 2: .net developer ( Systems analyst 3) the company is super stable and the position would be long term ( entertainment industry). The downside is no one ever leaves so promotion opportunities are limited and will take time. This situation is a typical corporate setting.
Assume all compensation is equal.
Background: I am recently separated from the military, I am just starting my civilian career. SharePoint is my expertise. I am also hoping to eventually go into Cybersecurity.
As a counterpoint to Beau, I went the other route. I don’t have the kind of attention span that development requires, and instead prefer to do infrastructure and out-of-box customizations. It really does all depend on what feels comfortable to you. I wouldn’t necessarily put all of your eggs in the on-premises basket (though if you’re in government, you can put a lot in there), but if that’s where you are comfortable, there is a good career path in it.
A lot of it is very personal to you. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years? Do you prefer development work or do you prefer Architect work? I know I enjoy the development side of things than I do the other. However position 2 doesn’t have the opportunities that I would want, so likely I would keep on looking for another position.
