Hello guys,

I am new in SharePoint, but I am willing to learn, from the simple fact that SharePoint feels like the future to me. This is my first post here.

I have installed a local instance of SP2013 in a virtual environment – VMWare with 3 servers – 1 DC, 1 SQL and 1 SP.

I have proposed for myself to work on the below use case:

There is a successful software company, called X. It has 100 employees which are spread in different departments – Management, IT, Customer Support and Sales. The company finds it really hard to manage all the documents and processes:

  • IT department has problems with tracking the Software Requirement documents. They need to find a way to share efficiently all the software documentation (requirements, wiki pages)
  • Customer Support finds it difficult to track all the tickets coming from customers. They want their customers to log in to the ticketing system and create the tickets by themselves
  • Sales department needs better tools to get relevant reports
  • Management department needs a better way to track employees worked hours, as well as vacation. They also want to use a better way of keeping the project progress

My first question would be – should I create 2 Web Applications – one for intranet and one for extranet?

extranet.contoso.com:

The company would need extranet for getting the extranet users to the ticketing system, and potentially to extend extranet for exposing the company products

intranet.contoso.com:

For all the internally used sites.

Do you agree with creating these 2 Web Applications?
