I am creating list and library templates to reuse as we stand up new sites. However, as we progress, our templates change. I need some way of

  • keeping a version history of these templates – without code or other tools (although we are getting ShareGate soon; I’m not sure that will help), and
  • identifying what version of a library/list a particular site is using.

Any ideas? Right now, each time I change a library or list, I do the following:

  1. Save it as a template.
  2. Download the stp file from the gallery.
  3. Upload the stp file into a “SharePoint Templates” document library I created.

This gives me a basic version history. However, I have no way of knowing what version was implemented in what site unless I do a manual comparison between the site’s library/list and each version in my document library’s version history. I don’t know what sites need to be updated unless I can tell what versions are in use by which sites. 🙁
