Simple question, when someone who has no idea what SharePoint is, how do you explain it to them? It is so simple, but so complicated.

Sometimes I just ask how the person organize their own files on his / her company and then when he or she answer that was with a normal file system schema then i start fhe talk and sometimes I start telling the story about A Collaboration Document Tool designed by Microsoft a long time ago to use internally and then this tool was growing …
I know the conversation has been dormant for a while but I thought I’d contribute since I only joined the site yesterday.
First off, I never try explain all of SharePoint in one discussion. Second, I don’t start by talking about SharePoint, instead I talk about the business problems that SharePoint can address out of the box.
So my starting point is actually to find out if the (potential) customer is aware of the collaboration challenges caused by using email and shared folders and then I talk about how team sites with search, lists and libraries can address those problems. If they are still interested, then I bring out the SharePoint “wheel” 🙂
