Been speaking to a few people in other org’s recently (we’re just rolling out Office 365) and they feel SharePoint isn’t as popular as it used to be. Is this something that you are seeing as well?
If you made a word cloud of all the words I hear every day, “SharePoint” would be the largest by far. However, as Mark said, it’s more about the entire Office 365 ecosystem these days, which includes SharePoint. Work-wise, I don’t get much on-prem work these days, though a few of my projects still are. Most of my work is in the cloud now.
Currently, SharePoint is used by 80%of Fortune 100 companies and is a key system for 70% of knowledge workers. Additionally, research from the Radicati Group indicates that SharePoint will continue to be adopted across all industry verticals and is projected to grow at an annual growth rate of 20% between 2015 and 2019. Stats show that in the last five years, 75% of all intranets implemented were built on SharePoint.
So yes, SharePoint is the market leader and still popular in 2016…if not more!
Here are 4 other reasons why organizations choose SharePoint:
- SharePoint’s capabilities and features are expansive
- Microsoft is investing heavily in SharePoint’s Future
- Rich integration with Office 365
- Out-of-the-box Solutions like Bonzai Intranet only make your SharePoint Intranet better

“SharePoint” the brand is dying steadily. MS Teams will become THE collaboration tool of 2017. SharePoint is destined to become a service that will be surfaced all over O365, but as a single product it will gradually drift away.
As a Business / power user I have a similar view to Mark and Nicks views above, although I believe a lot of it is due to the language use and therefore the perception. I think our language, especially at a business level is moving away from SharePoint, when in reality SharePoint is still there and will be for sometime, with ever evolving and alternative ‘Front ends’.
I was recently tasked with researching this very topic for our company blog. I came across some very exciting stats published by Radicati Group in 2016. Here‘s the infographic we created with the stats. What do you think?
