I have the domain mycompany.com registered in my Office 365 domains list and I own the domain name via Godaddy. I want my SharePoint online URL to be https://sp.mycompany.com. Could you please provide the steps to make this happen (detail is welcome as I’m pretty new to this).

You cannot change your private site collection domain. Here is the open item in uservoice requesting the ability to change these URLS.
You could perform a redirect from sp.mycompany.com to mycompany.sharepoint.com but it would only be a redirect and not a rename.
