I keep having this issue where some of my excel files that I have uploaded to the SharePoint site will give me “The file could not be accessed. try one of the following:
- Make sure the specified folder exists
- Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read only
- Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters < > ? [ ] : | or *
- Make sure the file/path name doesn’t contain more than 218 characters”
I have verified all of these things and based on that criteria, my files are fine. I even checked the format and all of them have the same format (xlsx). It’s also not ALL excel (xlsx) files that do it, and it doesn’t matter what method I use to upload the files, or how many I upload at a time. I am stumped on this one and I have also done a lot of Googling on this one and have not been able to find anything useful. I have thousands of documents I need to upload to SharePoint, not sure how many are excel files, but there’s a lot. This would be a huge deal to find a fix for this. Thank you very much. 🙂
You can try copying the file into a different location or site where the file is at the root level of the library to isolate whether it is file specific issue.
If it still doesn’t work, try out the steps I’ve mentioned in this post to clear the Office file cache.
The steps may vary based on the Office version installed in your PC.
