I’ve worked many years with SharePoint Server 2010 and find it a good collaboration portal. As far as upgrading, best wait for the next release. On February 2, 2015, Microsoft made an announcement on their blog on. There they state…
“…we realize many customers continue to run their businesses on-premises, within the firewall or with hybrid deployments. That’s why we are committed to making the next version of SharePoint server the most secure, stable and reliable version to date—allowing organizations to take advantage of cloud innovation on their terms.”
In my job, we kind of practice this where we have a SharePoint Server 2013 on premise setup and have configured it to connect to the App Store through a private cloud (another private domain).

In conclusion Bill Gate says keep you head in the cloud part of the time 🙂
