We have a fairly customized SharePoint 2010 on-premise implementation. For clarity – our customization’s are: SharePoint Designer Workflows, custom list input forms, custom DVWP’s, Nintex Workflows and Nintex Forms.
We are internally debating the benefits of upgrading our on-premise farm to SharePoint 2013, but we are also strategically planning to move to SharePoint Online/Office 365.
One question’s that we are struggling to get a clear answer on is: will upgrading our on-premise farm to SharePoint 2013 be helpful (or even required) if our end objective is to migrate to SharePoint Online/Office 365?
Thanks for all feedabck!
Hey,
First of all, can all your solutions be moved to O365? Remember that customizations are very limited in O365. Also, moving to SP 2013 On premises can be done without a third party tool , while moving to O365 can only be done by a third party tool (extra $$).
The third party tools however will only move content, and not any configurations. You might want to check out Sharegate or the tools on the list here: http://sharepoint-community.net/page/sp-migration-tools ;, they seem to be the best one on the market . They can move from both SP2010/Sp2013 directly to the cloud.
In Summary….
If your goal is to go in office 365, the only benefit of moving to SharePoint 2013 is to get people used to the UI and the new functions. But, I recommend just moving directly to O365 using a third party tool.
WE have similar questions these days.. Hopefully you get some feedback on this.
