HDD spindles will hold back a laptop regardless. I roll a SSD main with a 1TB secondary HDD but if you spin up too many VM’s, you will have HDD contention and experience a performance hit. no way around it if you have 3+ VM’s all fighting for spindle time on that secondary drive.
For Dev/Test and plenty of RAM, the effects can be minimized and still be in a usable state, but lets not brush over the facts, spindles matter.
