So they just announced the new archive feature for a team in MS Teams, what I want to know is what happens if the expiration feature is enabled for O365 Groups. Does it get deleted after the group lifetime has been reached or are archived teams exempted from this?

Great that you brought out this topic. There were lot of issues that were going around the teams & groups integration like the groups not getting deleted when the team is deleted & lot more in the last year.
But for your question, looks there is no relation to the teams & group expiry policy. Irrespective of whether the team is active or archived, the group expiry policy will take affect. But there are few notifications that are sent to the owners to renew it.
