Apart from paying £2k a year for a tool like ShareGate, what is the easiest way to copy content from one tenant to another?
You should use third-party software as through the software you can easily transfer all data without any issue of data removal. Through the help of software, you can perform Office 365 tenant to tenant migration process with selective data also as it has filtration options like date filtration and other header filtrations.
I would suggest our tool DMS-Shuttle for SharePoint. You can download the content (entire structure from document libraries) to your file system and then upload this content from the file system to another office 365 tenant. After that you can use bulk update for setting metadata, if needed. There is trial for 15 days http://www.dms-shuttle.com/downloads
Take WSP backup and restore – will not copy data/lists from sub sites of the site collection
Take full back up and restore – will not work 100% fine
So there are different ways to copy data from O365 to other tenants but none will work fine as supported by third party tools such as Sharegate
If you want to move the list contents to an existing list, I suggest you open both of them with Access because in this case, you can easily copy and paste the contents from one list to another.
For moving the entire lists, I suggest you save them as templates. List templates can be downloaded locally and uploaded to other sites. For your reference: Manage list templates
Because the article applies to SharePoint Server 2007, I’d like to also provide the detailed steps below:
1. Open your list that you want to save as a template.
2. Click LIST > List Settings.
3. In the Permissions and Management column, click Save list as template.
4. On the Save as Template page, type the File name, the Template name and tick Include Content.
5. Click OK.
6. If the operation is completed successfully, go to the list template gallery. (Site settings > Web Designer galleries > List templates)
7. Click on the template to download it.
8. Go to the list template gallery in the new site in another tenant.
9. Click FILES > Upload Document to upload the template.
10. Click the gear icon > Add an app and you can create a new list with this template.
But please note that a list template can contain up to 10 MB of content. For the large list exceeding this limitation, I suggest you export the lists to Excel instead, save them and import to the new sites. Below are the detailed steps:
1. Open your list in Internet Explorer.
2. Click LIST > Export to Excel.
3. Open the list in Excel and save it to your local computer.
4. Go to the site in the new tenant where you want to create a new list as the previous one, click Add an app.
5. Add an Import Spreadsheet app.
6. Give it a name and browse the saved Excel file.
7. Select Range of Cells for Range Type and the cells you want to for Range.
8. Click Import and the new list will be created.
For the small libraries, saving them as templates as above will be also fine. But generally the libraries contain more than 10 MB contents. So, it’s recommended that you save them as templates without the content and first recreate the frame in the new site.
Then, to move the contents, you need to download the documents and upload to the new library. To download and upload the documents in bulk, I suggest you use the OneDrive for Business sync client. For your reference: Sync OneDrive for Business or site libraries to your computer. Or, follow the Video: Copy or move library files by using Open with Explorer to move them via Open with Explorer.
