I’m really struggling with the basics – what seems should be intuitive. I am having a problem getting my Document Content Types to show in the +New option of the library. Before I allow use of content types the ‘New’ option allows me to choose the various Office apps and the Folder option. After I allow content types the New button seems to open the upload dialog. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m using the Cloud variety (Online 1)

This is a known issue and a big one from my perspective.
If you have content types turned on in a library in SP2013/Online, the New button will launch the upload window, instead of the expected behavior. In order for users to create new documents from within SP using content types, they would need to go into the library/list itself and use the ribbon to select New Document -> Content Type options dropdown, as they would in 2010. Of course, this is very unintuitive for the end user using 2013/Online and as a result I have seen some organizations turn off content types altogether.

I encourage you to let Microsoft know how troublesome this behavior is.
