We are looking at implementing Blob storage on out SharePoint 2010 Enterpise Farm. From the research I’ve done I’ve concluded that the FILESTREAM solution isn’t production ready. (Is this fair?)
I’ve looked at a number of the third party suppliers and wondered what the communities experience are with this and why perhaps one solution is better than another
I’d also be interested to know if you can point me at any real world case studies?
I think this would be helpful. It’s a demo for each of our SharePoint products. The RBS/StoragePoint section starts at the 36 minute mark: http://www.metalogix.com/Special-Pages/Metalogix-Product-Demos.aspx
Hi Shaun,
Thanks for replying. Do you have any screen casts etc you can share with me?
Yes I believe come of the solutions will allow you to set up policys to route blobs based on certain criteria.
Full disclosure – I work for Metalogix. But I wanted to answer your last point about case studies. Here is a list of all case studies for our RBS product StoragePoint: http://www.metalogix.com/Resources/All-SharePoint-Storage-Case-Studies.aspx
I think this one is the most interesting, Chalcroft (UK-based construction company) was able to offload 24TBs from their 2010 environment: http://www.metalogix.com/Products/StoragePoint/StoragePoint-BLOB-Offloading/Case-Study-StoragePoint-Chalcroft-Company.aspx
also you should consider the business drivers for using RBS…and the rules that you apply
e.g. if filesize > 1gb then filestream it
You have to do some forecasting and sadly a little clairvoyance!
