What is the Role of Business analyst in SharePoint?
Hi Ayush,
The answer to your question will vary depending on the company you work for. I have noticed that a lot of companies looking for a SharePoint Business Analyst do not know what title to use for a certain requirement they have and just call it a “SharePoint Business Analyst”. That being said, I think it would be important to have the skills listed below:
1. A good understanding of what SharePoint can do OOTB (meaning with no customization, just adding web parts, columns, views, 3rd party web parts or apps, etc).
2. A good understanding of what SharePoint can do with “no-code” solutions (i.e., SharePoint Designer, Master Pages/Page Layouts, InfoPath, XLST, etc.)
3. At least some understanding of when custom code is needed (i.e., custom Timer Jobs, scheduled Windows Tasks, custom solutions in Visual Studio, etc).
4. Understanding the risks involved, the limitations, maintenance needs, costs, and hardware/staffing requirements with each type of scenario listed in bullets 1 through 3.
5. The ability to create Visio diagrams/charts, functional & design documents, Test Scripts and perform some project management of sorts.
6. This part really depends on  the job: You may actually need the skills of a Developer or Administrator.
I am only speaking for myself, however my title is “SharePoint Business Analyst / Project Manager”. I do almost everything, monitor servers, install, PowerShell, create workflows in SPD, InfoPath, light programming in Visual Studio, testing, design, training, writing scripts & documentation, manage the projects – augh! I hear people in the industry refer to it as an “all-rounder”.
If you have any specific questions beyond this just send me an email and I can try to help you.
Regards,
Matthew
Just a note to everyone, I published my first book The SharePoint Business Analyst Guide recently that goes into a lot of great detail on this role:  http://www.matthewjbailey.com/the-sharepoint-analyst-guide-book/
Please could you describe more about
.Document requirements.
Thanks in Advance

Hey thanks all of you for the valuable inputs on the role of business analyst.
@John:I think it depends upon organisation if they want a BA or not because a BA role can be performed by Project manager in a small/ middle organisation but in a large enterprise environment roles get distributed and more diverse.
@IAN:Thanks and great article indeed.
I’d agree with Matthew.
Although I have never had the luck to meet a SP BA – But I would say that its all about promoting SharePoint where possible, gathering and translating the requirements. And even sometimes being able to say “You know, This should not be done in SharePoint!”.
