How to encrypt SharePoint Data? How does it effect performance?

We have SSL web application. BU want to have some list with sensitive data. Is it possible to encrypt list in database? Data can be viewed only by authorized users when they open list and data is encrypted in database.
May be this could be an option SQL Transparent Data Encryption? Encrypt site collection DB.
