Hi all,
I am unable to open the sharepoint designer 2010 .
I receive a message saying that an ” error occurred while trying to fetch data from your sharepoint site.Unexpected response from the server. The Content type of the response is “”. The Status code is “OK”.”
I tried many related solutions and here are few of them:
• Enabled designer settings in central admin for the web application in path >> Central Administration | General Application Settings | SharePoint Designer
• Also checked the SharePoint Designer settings for the site under(for particular site collection) Site Settings | Site Collection Administration | SharePoint Designer Settings
• Few IIS settings like changing authentication to windows and ”, added its providers to “NTLM” in addition to “Negotiate:Kerberos” and “Negotiate”
• Finally, tried by reinstalling SPD but it couldn’t help in fixing the issue ,rather than that I have tried some multiple ways to Nothing above works, is there any other thing i am missing, any help on this is appreciated
Thanks in advance Anusha
Have you created root level site collection of web application?
If you have not created root level site collection and tried to open other site collection, then SharePoint will give error.

Hi Anusha,
Can you please let us know what the build version for SharePoint you are running as well as the build version for SPD.
One of the most common issues that gives us this generic error is that you are running an older version of SharePoint Designer than the SharePoint build. In short the reply from a newer version of SP to SPD is not interpreted correctly and hence generic Unexpected Response from Server.
Note* This is the most common reason for receiving the above error. I do want to note that only in specific version changes, especially when health responses where implemented into the header reply, does this apply. So you do not always need to be on the same version but you should make sure you are past any milestone.
Also back in the day we found users having this issue when they where running office in hybrid (2 different versions) as well as when they upgraded from Preview or betas. The only fix for that was to completely remove office and reinstall at current version.
Thank you for the response kamalasekaran.. but i have already tried this and this doesn’t work.. I get error while trying to open any site in Sharepoint..its loads teh site contents and when it tries to communicate with web service it throws error.
