As a SharePoint consultant working with government and private industry I see many clients suffer the same pain points from well known shortcomings in the product stack. Yet it can be a struggle to find, get client buy in for, and implement solutions to resolve them. For example one that I ran into (again) this week, “Email a link” with Document ID not path/name URL.
This lack of easy to access standard reference solutions to common issues is IMHO holding back user satisfaction and adoption of SharePoint.
Yes MS forums and Stack and other sites are great resources, but sometimes it is like hunting for the proverbial needle. I think we can do better in bringing the together the top 100 fixes to shortcomings. Here is a suggestion for one way to address this:
I’d like to see the community develop a knowledge base of guidance of easy to apply standard config and customizations to address well known shortcomings. We could start by picking the top 10, or 50 or 100. Post this online at SharePoint Community or some well known SP collaboration site.
Drive the “solutions” gallery based on community input voting for top pain points and recommended / preferred solutions.
If many of us pitch in just an hour or two of advice, this could be a great resource.
What do you think?
All of those other resources are wonderful in their own right but they don’t provide what I’m aiming for: an uncluttered creme de la creme of solutions to the most common pain points in SharePoint around missing or crippled features and everyday use cases. I propose to build this “solutions gallery” within an existing SP community, eg this one, so as to leverage their people, knowledge and marketing. Maybe I can make the idea clearer by starting another thread that focuses top 10 pain points rather than the idea to create a gallery. Then we can see what people come up with. I’ll post a link here once I’ve done that.
