Hi,
We have now the App modul in SharePoint 2013 – and I was thrilled to hear that….first 🙂
After some Projects now we have got a lot of experience of what apps can do and more experiences of what they cannot do. Reading up on what an app actually is and how it can be used is really essential.
I love the App store mode, the thoughts about apps and how our Company can deliver solid solutions with apps, but the flexibility and security boundaries are not what I personally expected.
What are you experiences with apps? Please share them if you have any 🙂
From an IT-Pro perspective,Â
I find it nice that Microsoft made it really complicated (Customer needs me right 🙂 ? ) and also really secure.Â
The success however will depend on how many companies will make apps for SharePoint.
I’ve got a feeling that just like with the Sandbox model they have approached it from a technology first perspective rather than a user first.
Can’t say I blame them much – with the ever closer focus on the cloud their previous ‘open-ness’ was untenable – but usual marketing mess coming out of Redmond just tends to confuse everyone.
Oh – and they don’t yet seem to have leartn from others failings yet that just calling something an (i)App and having something we will call a ‘store’ will automagically lead to success. Apples genius was making it all seamless – can you say the same about the Office App store experience?
It appears to us that, instead of augmenting the SharePoint experience, it’s more for building things that can either use SharePoint as a data store or to leverage some of the back-end services like workflow (which is run out-of-band in Azure now anyway). I like the model, but so far we’ve found it lacking when it comes to customizing an existing SharePoint site, although perhaps that’s not the intention anyway.
