Hi to all, i’m implementing a new intranet in a government agency and I already have experience with public facing websites but not intranet. I was in doubt if I use Publishing or Team Site template. I am well acquainted with publishing but as I said the use was in a public facing site type. I did a test with Team Site template and activated the publishing feature but still found it strange (or missing functionality or worse, that sometime I feel lacking some important functionality in the future). Please help me in this.
Thanks
I have found that on the Publishing Enterprise Wiki I can add a calendar, but I cannot add anything to the calendar. If I use the Team Site template I can add a calendar and add/edit events to the Calendar. Has anyone found this to be true?
Agreed, you definitely need to be able to provide the ability to make changes that are not immediately visible to users, i.e. making use of the content lifecycle management, but this doesn’t require the publishing template, it just requires the publishing features to be activated.
The reason I prefer the blank template is that it means that there is nothing “pointless” in the site from the start – you add in the lists and libraries and features that you need and don’t leave needless lists that never get used lying around. Â It keeps things tidy and uncluttered.
This also means that all sites templates are available during site creation – something that I think is important when creating an intranet site. Â As I mentioned, this is always controllable through site settings.
The landing page should be Publishing template to utilize WCM for content lifecycle management. But if that’s just simply where people read announcement, company news, some highlights then Team Site template is worth considering.
Interesting, most (maybe all) company intranets I’ve dealt with have had to have a whole variety of content which relied on all the templates. Â Ultimately it doesn’t really matter which you use but I personally wouldn’t use the public facing internet site template as the basis for an intranet site. Â Page layouts are just part of the publishing infrastructure feature, once that’s activated you will have access to all that you need.
Hope this helps.
