Hi to all, i’m implementing a new intranet in a government agency and I already have experience with public facing websites but not intranet. I was in doubt if I use Publishing or Team Site template. I am well acquainted with publishing but as I said the use was in a public facing site type. I did a test with Team Site template and activated the publishing feature but still found it strange (or missing functionality or worse, that sometime I feel lacking some important functionality in the future). Please help me in this.
Thanks
Think about an Intranet as a companies internal marketing site. Just like a public facing site but just for internal customers. It is more about disseminating information so I always use the publishing template for an intranet site. Team sites are for collaboration.
Sorry George, i’m using 2013 version. Actually i did some research and tests yesterday and i very inclined to use Publishing template mostly because (i’m was suspicious on that) of the lack of custom layouts on Team Sites templates (if i’m not in a mistake). Anyway, i would like your opinion on that if you could. Thanks.
Hi Dan
You didn’t state which version of SharePoint you are using – could you clarify? Â I don’t think the answer matters in this case, as long as you are not using SharePoint 2007, but it’s helpful to know.
When creating an intranet site using the out-of-the-box templates, as of SharePoint 2010 there is no standard template that will provide a basis for creating an intranet portal. Â All functionality that you require for this is activated through features and so in 2010 you could simply use the blank site template and build everything from scratch. Â This template has been hidden in 2013 and so if this is the version you are using then just take your pick from the collaboration templates and work from there. Â I’d recommend creating an instance of each for testing purposes so you can understand what types of intranet functionality are available. Â Once the publishing features are activated you will be on your way. Â You may also want to activate the SharePoint Standard Site Collection feature, for example, to enable additional search and other functionality.
What features do you feel are missing? Â I’m sure we can direct you to the correct place.
Kind regards,
George
