We have a MOSS 2007 Farm made up of 3 servers (2 Web Front End’s and 1 Application server) currently running on Windows Server 2003 R2 x64. We are planning to upgrade MOSS 2007 farm running on Windows Server 2008 R2 OS. i.e. Just wanted OS upgraded and using the same hardware.
Any advice or links to resources would be appreciated.
Inplace upgrade in pain – Better create new Server with 2008 R2, install SharePoint and add to the farm and move the roles – Later you hit SQL! This is safe !
Google “How to move a SharePoint Server 2007 32-bit environment to a 64-bit environment on Windows Server 2008.”
Excellent article shared by Stephen Smith and Penny Coventry
As you already mentioned you have to use the same servers then I would advise you to detach one WFE from the farm and then upgrade its OS to 2008 R2 along with MOSS, perform a full backup of the farm and restore in the newly created WFE along with customization. Once you are done with it just upgrade other machines and attached to the same WFE created earlier. Divide services of WFEs and App server.
Not sure the question here, perform a full backup of each server, then upgrade the OS of each (if it meets minimum requirements). Check for any issues with IIS and config. The only implications for SharePoint are lost config settings and a failed upgrade. There is no SharePoint plan for this, because you aren’t touching SharePoint.
