Does anyone have experience in using SP 2013 as both an external-facing website as well as an extranet? I work for a non-profit organization where we’ve been exploring the possibility of implementing social software (SocialText) to our membership. We are at a crossroads with the tool, and at a point where we will be developing a new website in 2014, but the platform has not yet been decided.
I have a vision where the web could be built in SP13 and have an extranet for our membership on that same platform. Utilizing the profiles for our members (which would connect into our CRM on Dynamics) and tapping into the social functionality from a members (vs internal) perspective. Part of the extranet would include a knowledge base built on wiki pages that could share and feed content via metadata management tools that align with the external facing website.
I’ve seen a few really good websites built on SP13, but have not heard of anyone else utilizing it in this manner to bring the social sphere into an extranet scenario. FYI, our association currently has approximately 11,000 members. If anyone has experience or heard of someone doing this, I’d like to connect more on this for further discussion.

Yes, our Company makes both public websites and extranets for SharePoint 2013 as a packed solution.
Our solution makes it possible to get a linked sync. on different content such as document libraries with a simple click. It and keep this content synced to an Office 365 SharePoint tenant (the new 2013 version of Office 365). Our customers are happy about this solution as they have one platform for intranet, extranet and public website and the users only need to learn SharePoint once.
The external users, though, are the build-in “Share” functionality, so Microsoft is handling the external user database.
Perhaps our solution could be fitted to your needs – after all I heard Microsoft gave free Office 365 licenses to non-profit organizations 🙂
