Hey fellow SharePoint newbies,
Are any of you interested in studying for Microsoft certification exams? I tend to use cert exams as motivation to learn new technologies. To be honest, I’ve not done as well at this (this time) as I thought I would, as I managed to fail both the Dev and Admin exams for SP2010 – even though I thought I was rather well prepared.
There’s an expression, “Never a failure, always a lesson.” Well my lesson was to practice more. I need to do all of the exercises in the Training Kit from MS for Configuring SP2010, and I need to do much more practice development.
SO… In order to lay a foundation of knowledge about the SharePoint environment, I am diving back in to the Training Kit and have another go at the Configuring exam (and that will be discontinued this summer, so time is running out!).
Anyone interested in sharing the journey? …Keeping each other going (nagging) 🙂

Although I’ve been mainly a developer for much of my IT career, I’m shooting for the Config exam first – to give myself an understanding of the underpinnings. That said, here’s materials I’d been using when I was studying for the dev exam (and I’ll be back to that after the config):Â

- Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Plain & Simple: Learn the simplest ways to get things done with Microsoft SharePoint 2010Â (book)
- 70-573 CS – TS: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Application Development C# (Practice test from MeasureUp)
 On a test machine (following instructions in the first book mentioned above), I set up a virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 and the various bits of software one needs in order to have a SharePoint development environment with which to experiment and learn.
Thanks Stephen! Â Unfortunately my company is just now moving to 2010, so it will be quite some time before I see 2013 in any real capacity. Â I only hope the 2010 exam is still around when I’m ready to take it…
Hi Stephanie if you are working with SP2010 as a Developer then that a good exam to go for but if you are looking into SP2013 the 70-480 exam:

Is a good place to start as it’s technologies you have probably already used before. Â
I’m definitely interested in certification exams. Â I’m nowhere near ready for them yet, but it is a goal of mine to attain a SharePoint certification in the near(ish) future. Â I think I’d start with the MCTS exam 70-573 for SP2010 Application Development, since that is where most of my knowledge lies. Â Is that the Dev exam you were talking about? Â Any pointers for things I should be paying special attention to when I come across them in projects?

Was awakened yesterday morning with a call from work…worked all day until shortly before bed. Lovely. So maybe TODAY I’ll be able to post goals/ plans for my studying …Even if I’m the ONLY one doing it, it will help me to log it here …what I use, questions, etc …keeps me moving forward and learning!
