This is great Ian thanks. Im trying to make sense of identifying business needs without associating it to SharePoint due to as you have pointed out negative perceptions of certain words like intranet, and well SharePoint as a word also.

I think that to get the best out of SharePoint you need to have a business reason to have it in the first place.
Is there a business problem you are trying to solve now?
Document management
Social
communities
Business automation
Business intelligence
The list goes on and on…… SharePoint has the potential to cover them all BUT there is no one size fits all AND it might not happen out the box without clear direction.
