What are the Key Requirements for Protecting SharePoint Data Security?
An article titled My SharePoint Rights Management Wish List states that the best solution should meet four key requirements:
- Automated rights application.
- Broad control of information usage across all document types, users, and devices.
- Audit and monitoring of documents and user activities.
- Easy-to-use
What other requirements you think are important? What do you think about the current solutions for SP? What we can improve to protect SharePoint data security? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kate
Hi Kate,
I think it’s important to empower the information owner to easily decide how widely or tightly data should be shared. I often say “It’s called SharePoint, not SecurePoint”. I don’t think most users really understand SharePoint security and as such leave the system wide open. The trick is to use a tool that easily allows users to decide what parts of the organization should be able to access a document, calendar entry etc.
It seems companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars ensuring that just because you work their you can’t access every office, but then let you access every document online. They really could have saved a lot of money!
