I was wondering what solutions / apps people have used for SharePoint on the mobile ? The world is going crazy with “Bring Your Own Device”, so I imagine this has been a particular pain point…
Notices a couple of mobile apps out there, used them ? Any recommendations ?
BYOD can mean anything from a small phone, to a “phablet” like the Note, to a small tablet (various 7″ devices or the slightly larger iPad Mini), to “full size” iPad and 10″ tablets, to ultrabooks, to full power monster laptops. Screen sizes can therefore vary from 3.x inches to 17 inches, and interface will include touch / gestures on some, and mouse / keyboard on others.
So… refining the discussion to mobile – which I shall define as “instant on” and phone/phablet/tablet only – helps put a little scope on the topic. With these confines, it then makes sense to approach the apps as a *subset* of what one might expect if working from a full keyboard / mouse on a browser displaying on a wide screen, with gobs of memory and CPU available.
The tasks addressed should focus on quicker tasks: approvals, scheduling, minor edits. For example, I don’t mind looking at part of a spreadsheet on a tablet. But if I’m expected to review a dozen tabs of varying content, some perhaps containing 100 or more rows and 10 or 20 columns – and then add some modifications – I do not want to deal with that on a tablet.
If I’m reviewing a request for a change to a production system, or doing a final proof of a presentation, or adjusting travel plans, submitting time & expense …THOSE are tasks I can see being addressed via mobile (at least tablet – some are more challenging from phone).
It’s interesting to me that I can read books / magazines / new sites for hours on a tablet. But for work-related documents, I want the content to be digestible in smaller chunks.
