Go on let’s have em, what laptops are you all running and do you recommend for SP 2013 development ? The MBP a contender (surely not)!… Is anyone surviving on 16gb ?
UPDATE! Can you also add your laptop and configuration to this list : (User “Add to List”). http://list.ly/list/73V-sharepoint-2013-laptops. If someone has the same one, just vote it up.
It is worth noting though that you should get the upgrades at the same time, contrary to how you might normally buy a laptop.
i.e. don’t buy a low spec machine and upgrade yourself. You can’t get the SSD/RAM as cheap in the UK as they can get it there and have it installed in the machine.
Cool Mark — a quick look shows their cheapest listing is here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LENOVO-THINKPAD-W530-i7-3740QM-FHD-4GB-RAM-…
for $US 1559, including free shipping within the US
So, here’s another one who ships to the UK for approx £1000 + £65 shipping. Can’t complain about that then! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-W530-243857U-i7-3740QM-2-…
A quick look for the same model in the UK: … can’t find the same, but close: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-W530-15-6-inch-Processor-Professiona…
for £1460.
So, the lesson is clear — have a nice trip to the USA in the off-season, and the difference in cost should at least pay for your flight.
Hey Mark, any chance you could share the name of the vendor? Not everyone will ship internationally — and in fact are generally outside the terms of their agreement with the manafacturer if they do so (geographic exclusivity & all that). I’m not worried about laptops as they’ve got international warranties, but with other products there are often regional differences as well which gives the manufacturers a bit more excuse for those limitations. Having said that, I’m in the US in a couple of weeks … maybe I can go shopping!
You can actually buy the same machine I did and have it shipped to the UK. A colleague of mine did that and the import duty was only about £60 or so. Saved an awful lot of money.

Wow … what a lot of responses!
